2020 Open House Sessions

    Below are descriptions of each of the sessions taking place at this year's Graduate Open House. In addition to these sessions, the computer lab will be open throughout the event should you wish to submit your application that day. Staff will be available in the lab to assist you should you require it. 

    Session 1

    Assessing Your Own Leadership
    This session will provide an opportunity for self-assessment and discovery of your own leadership skills and characteristics. We will talk about career outcomes for Organizational Leadership degrees as well as how to integrate your self-assessment results into your own career decisions and career conversations.

    Becoming an Occupational Therapist
    Do you want to help people at-risk for or with disabilities maximize their quality of life? Are you interested in understanding how human and environmental factors influence an individual’s participation in meaningful daily life activities? If so, the field of Occupational Therapy may be for you. Join us to learn more about the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program and how you may be able to work with children and adults in a variety of medical and community-based settings. The MSOT program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (ACOTA). acoteonline.org

    Graduate Opportunities in Computing
    Computer Science is one of the most influential fields today. Its applications and discoveries impact every aspect of modern life. It is a rich, broad field that offers several sub-disciplines including data science, cyber security, software engineering, and intelligent systems. Some of these fields, including data science and cybersecurity, are comprehensive enough to be the focus of entire graduate programs themselves. Lewis University offers outstanding graduate education opportunities in all these areas and this talk will familiarize you with them so you can choose the one that is best for you. We offer options for career changers and for those without a background in Computer Science.

    Educational Studies: Special Education, Secondary Education, Middle Level Education and Foreign Language
    This session is devoted to individuals who are interested in earning their initial teaching license in the areas of:
    • Secondary or Middle Level Education (science, mathematics, English/language arts, or social studies)
    • Foreign Language (Spanish Education or Special Education)
    Participants will have the opportunity to meet with program directors and faculty to learn more about these individual programs.

    Graduate Education: Foundations, Literacy and Leadership
    This session is designed for individuals who already hold a teaching license and are interested in a graduate program to earn additional credentialing in:
    •  Reading and Literacy (reading specialist or reading teacher endorsement)
    •  Educational Leadership/ Principal or Teacher Leader Endorsement 
    •  English as Second Language/ Bilingual and Instructional Technology
    •  Educational Leadership for Teaching and Learning, Ed.D.
    Graduate Programs in Nursing: MSN and DNP
    This session will describe the Graduate Nursing program offerings at Lewis University. Career options for each of the specializations with in MSN, DNP and Certificate Programs will also be discussed. We offer specializations in: Nursing Education, Healthcare Systems Leadership, Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, School
    Nurse and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. This program is open to those with current licensure.

    How to Be Successful in the Clinical Mental Health Field
    Being successful in the mental health field often depends on how flexible one is willing to be. Join this session to learn what some of our most successful students have done to enjoy a lucrative career, including being continuously active in their professional associations, being open to working with many different clinical populations, holding multiple professional roles (counselor, teacher, supervisor, etc.) and more. Attend this session to learn more about the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.A.) program at Lewis.

    Mass Incarceration/Community Involvement in Police Depts.
    This session will be conducted in 2 parts. Part 1, Criminal Justice: Learn how the US prison population has outpaced population growth and crime, and how investment over incarceration will improve safety. Part 2, Public Safety Admin: Learn about the benefit of community involvement with police and the research that supports its continued use. After the presentations, each presenter will hold individual group discussions with attendees.

    Speech-Language Pathology: A Day in the Life of an SLP
    This session will acquaint you with the wide scope of practice and job settings of speech-language pathology. Walk through a typical day for a school-based SLP, as well as for a healthcare SLP, to get an idea of what these dynamic professionals encounter on a daily basis.

    Advanced Business Degrees Provide Greater Career Opportunities
    Graduates with advanced business degrees are in high demand in today's job market, and that demand will continue to grow. How do you fit into that market? What type of business degree should you seek compared to the type of job you aspire to pursue?

    Discovering Careers in Aviation and Transportation
    The aviation & transportation industry needs well-educated professionals to meet today's high safety and security standards. Lewis’ Master of Science in Aviation and Transportation (MSAT) prepares students with knowledge of critical thinking and problem solving along with a strong understanding of transportation operations and human dynamics in order to move the industry forward.     Make a Difference as a School Nurse
    Are you an RN and would like to become a School Nurse? Our school nurse certificate program will prepare you for a Professional Educator License endorsed in school nursing. A bachelor’s degree is required for endorsement. We offer both a non-degree and a Master of Science in Nursing degree track option.

    MSW & You
    This session explores the benefits and value of the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, employment options for clinical social workers, and the growing job market for social work professionals. Class offerings and program requirements in the MSW program at Lewis University are explored. The clinical focus of the program lays the foundation for future employment opportunities across a spectrum of practice areas from healthcare, mental health and child welfare.
